Kearny Junction is a railroad junction in Kearny, New Jersey, where the Kearny Connection splits from the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad main line. The Kearny Connection was built in the 1990s to connect the DL&W to the former Pennsylvania Railroad line to New York Penn Station that crosses above the DL&W there. For the first time, suburban passenger trains from Lackawanna territory could run to Manhattan instead of Hoboken; New Jersey Transit dubbed the new service Midtown Direct.
A westward view shows the two PRR Penn Station main tracks crossing above the three DL&W main tracks and one connecting track; the track just to the north is the other connecting track.
The new connecting track largely obliterated the remains of the PRR branch that once dropped down from the Penn Station line to reach industries in Harrison. Just west of Kearny Jct, the remnant of the DL&W Harrison Cut-off to Kingsland joins the DL&W main line.
